Vancouver, Hope, Othello Tunnels

Erste Eindrücke aus Hope und von den Othello Tunnels.

Greetings from Othello Tunnels Campground and RV Park near Hope.

Preparations

Yesterday was the start of the first leg of our tour. First, we successfully took over the moving residential battleship and begin our journey with a trip to Walmart®. Walmart® - hold me tight - such a huge and cluttered, crap and junk-filled, only four-shelfs with grocerys store. But anyway. It's enough for the beginning. On we go in the direction of Hope - always along Highway 1.

Hope

Vancouver's suburban area present itself like any other North American suburb. Flat commercial buildings, accessible only by car, stretch along the streets. In between, rows and rows of single-family houses made of wood. In the distance, a bad weather front seems to be approaching on the horizon. On closer inspection, however, I notice: it’s mountains. Forested boulders to the peaks, blurring the transition between earth and clouds.

Having arrived in Hope, we explore Memorial Park with its mighty trees and the Fraser River, which doesn't carry much water. Finally we arrive at our destination for today: Othello Tunnel Campground and RV Park.
For CAD 34 per night we get a site directly on the river with a view of the floods. Not far away: the Othello Tunnel Trail.

Othello Tunnels

Of course we hiked there and experienced a first Canada feeling - a roaring river cutting deep into the cliff-like rock formations. Four tunnels were cut through the rocks for the railroad at the beginning of the century. Extremely impressive. Behind tunnel three we descend death-defyingly and heroically to the river and find ourselves between huge boulders whipped around by the spray, surrounded by water, rocks, forest and moss. As said and as you can see, a first highlight.
